Capital and the largest city of the State of South Carolina, Columbia is the first planned city in the state with wide streets arranged in a grid pattern, and the second planned city in the United States with a population of 116,278 according to the 2000 U.S. Census. Columbia has a vast history that dates back to over 200 years and has played a significant role in the American Civil War as an important political and supply center for the Confederate States Army. Towards the beginning of the 20th century Columbia emerged as a regional textile manufacturing center and had six mills by 1907 that together employed over 3,400 employees. These mills contributed significantly to the Midland’s economy. Construction boomed in Columbia in the years 1911 – 1912 with major projects like the Union Bank Building at Main and Gervais, the Palmetto National Bank, a shopping arcade, and large hotels at Main and Laurel and at Main and Wheat costing almost $2.5 million in construction.
Columbia has a strong foothold in the education sector. The University of South Carolina (USC) which was chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College and in 1906 as the University of South Carolina, has its home in Columbia. The university offers 350 degree programs to over 27,500 students through its 15 colleges and schools. Other renowned in Columbia include the Allen University, widely recognized for its development of African-Americans; Benedict College; Columbia College; The Columbia International University; Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, one of the oldest Lutheran seminaries in North America; Midlands Technical College; Fortis College and the Remington College including a number of private and public schools.
Columbia has a vast conglomeration of various art forms which is evident in its theaters, galleries, dance companies, orchestra, arts schools and outdoor art and murals. Many artists living in Columbia hold exhibitions of their work in galleries, museums and at festivals all year round, giving them a unique opportunity to showcase their skills to visitors. Various other festivals and annual events attract millions of visitors.
